Here's how we rang in the New Year. First, we attended New Year's Eve Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland (see bottom right in collage). It was packed to capacity while many stood outside straining to hear the proceedings. Mass ended shortly before midnight and the congregation poured outside the church's gate. Then, as the Sky City Tower lit up from the bottom to the top (see top left in collage), spectators bellowed the countdown 10, 9, 8, 7.....1. The breathtaking fireworks display emanated from the Tower for about 15 minutes. After the crowd dispersed, we headed to Sky City with some of our friends for the New Year's party. We danced into the wee hours, screaming excitedly at one point when the DJ played Kevin Lyttle's "Turn Me On". We rarely hear soca music being played in Auckland. All in all, it was good fun.
